Another Weekend With Chiang Mai

Heidi, Charlotte, and I (The “A” Team as we refer to ourselves as, A for Adventure of course) decided to go to Chiang Mai for another adventure this past weekend. Adventure it surely was. We arrived late Friday night and were near death due to a pizza craving. We tried to get the guy at the front desk of our hostel help us ordering pizza in but all he said was, “You want McDonalds?” in this quiet, creeper voice. That was obviously no help being that #1 McDonalds is my least favorite place of all time, and #2 they have no pizza. So we walked the streets, and finally hailed a Tuktuk to take us to Pizza. He knew of a Pizza Hut! Score! He drops us off at an actual Pizza Hut. We are now salivating as we see people eating inside. We run to the door and BAM our dreams are crushed. Pizza Hut closes at 11pm. It is currently 11:02 and they will not serve us. So instead we wander around, end up at a Night Bazaar, and the only place we find that is still open is none other than, yep you guessed it. McDonalds. Gross.

On Saturday we decided to rent scooters to drive around all day. When the scooter guy came, I was filling out our paper work and realized not one of us had a passport, driver’s license, or any form of ID. I didn’t get too far on the paperwork; I thought we were for sure out of luck. But this isn’t America, this is Thailand! He settled for a deposit of 3000 baht. Done. We got a 10 second tutorial of how to work the thing in broken English and were off on our scary drive. The traffic was pretty sketchy, and we were also pretty bad drivers but eventually got the hang of it. We got full body Thai Massages, got real pizza, and drove around the whole town. We then drove them up a beautiful mountain to the Doi Suthep temple. It was beautiful and probably our favorite part of the weekend.

We then hit up the Saturday Night Market and headed back to our hostel. There was a little party going on in the garden area and so we joined that, made a few friends after a brief awkward period. They were drunk and heading off to do Karaoke. Charlotte and I really couldn’t pass up a fun night out so we decided to follow behind on our scooters. We ended up at what looked like an abandoned motel 6, but instead of hotel rooms each room was a private Karaoke lounge. Surprisingly we had a great time singing 90’s songs and watching everyone else sing. We headed back and zonked out after a day like that.

Sunday we went on a zip lining adventure! It was my first time, and the A team dominated.

After a fun Sunday of zip lining we tried to make our way home. Basically an 8-hour train ride turned into a 14-hour nightmare. There was an accident on the railway, so we were shipped on a bus where no one had heard of our sweet little home in Phichit. Heidi lost her wallet, they wouldn’t let us on a train, we couldn’t figure out our stupid key to get our bikes, and we got back with 20 minutes to prepare to teach. Up all night, but worth the amazing weekend we had!

This weekend we’re headed to Sukothai and I promise I’ll actually write about it!
